Teeth Whitening Treatments Available To You

Dentist Blog

Generally, deciduous teeth (commonly referred to as baby teeth) will always be whiter than adult teeth. As you become older, your permanent teeth steadily become stained, which gives them a darker or yellower appearance. This is why it should not come as a surprise that opting for teeth whitening is one of the ways to make you appear more youthful than you really are. There are a number of reasons why your teeth will become discoloured over time. The main cause of discolourations tends to stem from the types of foods that you ingest. However, your teeth may also become discoloured due to medications or even your genes. Here are some of different teeth whitening treatments that are available to you if you have tooth discolouration.

Over-the-Counter Whitening Treatments

As the name suggests, over-the-counter whitening treatments are options that are readily available to you at your local pharmacy. You would not need a dentist's prescription to purchase these types. The different over-the-counter whitening treatments will come with varying instructions. This is because they will have different potencies of their active ingredient, which is hydrogen peroxide. One of the more common over-the-counter whitening treatments that you can opt for are whitening strips. These are thin strips coated with hydrogen peroxide that are applied directly onto your teeth for a period of time.

Another over-the-counter whitening treatment you could opt for is whitening gel. This is also applied directly onto your teeth and rinsed off once the set duration of time has elapsed. Over-the-counter whitening treatments are quite safe, but it should be noted that their bleaching results do not last a significant amount of time. Hence, you would have to regularly repeat the whitening process.

Dental office whitening treatments

As the name suggests, these types of whitening treatments are carried out at your dentist's office. One of the popular whitening options that dentists will use is laser teeth whitening. With this procedure, the hydrogen peroxide is applied onto your teeth. The dentist will then shine a laser beam on the hydrogen peroxide to speed up the bleaching process. This whitening treatment option is pain free and takes a significantly short period of time.

Although dental office whitening treatments are more expensive than over-the-counter options, they tend to be the better investment. This is because the whitening results last much longer. Hence, you would require fewer treatments in order to keep your teeth stain free.
